WAATU
RESTAURANT BRAND FILM
THE BRIEF & CHALLENGE :
WAATU is an open-fire restaurant at The Ungasan Clifftop Resort, where the food, room, and service are designed around flame, shadow, and volcanic texture. The brief was to create a hero film and chef interview that felt true to that identity.
Earlier content had treated the restaurant too brightly, flattening the atmosphere that makes the experience distinctive. Our challenge was to restore the intended mood while keeping the food, fire, and people clear and compelling on screen.

STRATEGY & IMPACT :
We built the visual approach around controlled darkness rather than forcing the space to look brighter than it feels in person. Low-key lighting held detail in the food and faces while allowing fire, embers, and reflective surfaces to become practical light sources. Camera movement stayed deliberate and close to the action so the restaurant felt tactile, intimate, and alive.
The hero film sells the full guest experience: arrival, flame, preparation, plating, and atmosphere. The chef interview gives the campaign its human centre, connecting WAATU’s open-fire concept to the thinking behind the menu. Together, the two films present a more faithful picture of the restaurant—dark, warm, and cinematic without losing clarity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
TDR FILMS produced two films for WAATU: a cinematic hero film presenting the restaurant experience and a chef interview explaining the thinking behind its open-fire concept.
WAATU is designed around fire, shadow, volcanic texture, and an intimate evening atmosphere. The visual treatment preserved that identity instead of making the room appear brighter and flatter than it feels in person.
We use controlled low-key lighting, careful exposure, selective supplementary light, and practical sources such as flames and embers. This keeps food, faces, and service details clear while protecting the atmosphere of the space.
A restaurant hero film can connect arrival, interiors, preparation, fire, plating, service, and the guest experience into one concise brand story. The exact structure follows the venue’s identity and campaign goal.
The hero film creates desire through atmosphere and craft. The interview adds context and a human voice, helping audiences understand the idea behind the menu and the people responsible for the experience.
Yes. We build the lighting, camera movement, framing, and colour approach around the venue’s real character so the finished film feels recognisable to the brand rather than applying one generic restaurant look.
