How We Choose Filming Locations in Bali for Brand Shoots

You spent the budget, hired a crew, approved all the edit. But nothing as the result. A few hundred views, a handful of shares, and the uncomfortable silence of a campaign that didn’t move the needle.

It’s one of the most common and expensive mistakes we see brands make in Bali and across Southeast Asia. The video looked great but it failed to drive results.

At TDR FILMS, we’ve spent years working alongside brands, hospitality businesses, and marketing teams who came to us after exactly that experience. What we’ve learned is this: the problem is almost never the quality of the footage. It’s the strategy behind the film.

Here’s what’s actually going wrong, and how effective brand film production is supposed to work.

The Brief Was Beautiful — But It Wasn't a Strategy

Most brand videos fail for a simple reason: they were made without a clear objective. Not “raise brand awareness” — but a specific, measurable one. What do you actually want someone to do after watching? Book a stay, request a quote, share it with their team? Too many briefs we’ve seen focus on how the brand wants to feel rather than what the viewer is supposed to do. Those two things need to work together, and when they don’t, you get a beautiful film with no destination.

Before a single frame is shot, we sit with every client and ask one question: what does success look like six months from now? That answer drives everything — the story structure, the distribution plan, the call to action. A brand video in Bali without that foundation is an expensive guess.

Where We Actually Shoot — and Why

Bali offers a remarkable range of filming environments. Here are some of the locations we work with most frequently for brand productions, and the types of stories they suit best:

Canggu & Seminyak — Lifestyle, F&B, fashion, contemporary brands
Bali’s creative heartland. Modern villas, design-forward cafés, and beach clubs give this area a cosmopolitan energy that works well for brands targeting a global, design-literate audience. Good for: short-form social content, product launches, hospitality films.

Ubud & surrounds — Wellness, culture, sustainability, heritage
Jungle canopy, rice terraces, and a slower pace of life. Ubud is ideal for brands whose story centres on authenticity, nature, or Balinese culture. The light in the valley is particularly extraordinary in the early morning. Good for: wellness brands, eco hospitality, documentary-style content.

Uluwatu & Bukit Peninsula — Luxury, surf, high-end hospitality
Clifftop ocean views, limestone caves, and some of Bali’s finest boutique hotels. This is the island’s most dramatic coastal scenery — perfect for aspirational brand films where the setting is part of the status message. Good for: luxury hospitality, travel brands, fashion campaigns.

Private villas & studio spaces — Controlled production, any brand category
Purpose-built studio environments like those at Bali Arts District in Canggu offer multiple set designs — including a 15m × 18.5m water studio with 17 natural pools, a Kasbah-style outdoor set, and a Secret Garden studio — all within a single location. No permits, no crowds, full creative control. Good for: any brand that needs a polished, controlled visual environment.

Karangasem & East Bali — Raw, cinematic, off-the-beaten-path
Fewer productions come here, which means less visual noise. Ancient temples, volcanic landscape, and traditional fishing villages offer a Bali that most brand films haven’t yet captured. For brands that want to differentiate visually, this is worth the extra drive. Good for: documentary content, heritage brands, adventure and travel.

The Deliverables — What You Actually Need to Walk Away With

This is the section most briefs skip entirely, and it’s one of the most expensive omissions. “A brand video” is not a deliverable. The following is:

  • One 90-second hero film for the website homepage
  • Three 30-second social cuts optimised for Instagram Reels
  • One vertical format (9:16) for Stories
  • One silent-captioned version for LinkedIn

Each of those outputs affects how we shoot. If you need a vertical cut, we need to frame shots with that in mind on set — not try to crop a landscape frame into a portrait format in the edit. Knowing the full deliverable list before the shoot saves time, money, and the frustration of discovering halfway through post-production that you need a format that wasn’t accounted for.

According to Wistia’s 2026 State of Video Report, 76% of companies are now producing video on at least a monthly cadence. That consistency requires a clear system — and the deliverables list is where that system starts.

One Location Isn't Always the Answer

Something we push clients to think about early: most brand films are stronger when they show a world rather than a single place. Two or three complementary locations — a private villa interior, a rice terrace at golden hour, and a cliffside shot at dusk — give the edit more visual range and make the film feel more expansive than a single-location shoot, even on the same budget.

The key is planning this into the production schedule from the start. Moving between locations costs time, and time on a shoot day costs money. When we design a location plan, we map the driving routes, factor in setup time at each spot, and schedule around the light at each location — not just the first one.

Bali gives you a lot to work with. The job of a good production team is to know which parts of it to use, when, and why — so your brand film looks like it was made with intention, not just taken advantage of the scenery.
